Title: Armstrong Whitworth Albemarle The Armstrong Whitworth Albemarle medium bomber was designed to be built by companies outside the aircraft industry, and included many parts in steel to try and conserve aluminium. This had a negative effect on performance. First flown in 1940, the Albemarle was the first British built aircraft to incorporate a nose wheel undercarriage. Performance was disappointing however and it never saw service as a bomber, the 600 examples built being used as a transport and glider tug.
